In Everything

I have said it in an earlier post, and I felt compelled to say it again today, that my husband frequently emphasized that we need to be more thankful.  He had read a quote one time that he had his secretary print out so he could set it on his desk top.  It said, What if all you have today is what you thanked God for yesterday?  This morning I read I Thessalonians 5:18–In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you, and I was convicted by it.  It’s easy to give thanks when all is well.  When I’m getting a paycheck, when I’m healthy, and the list can go on of all the good things that we can easily be thankful for.  I then thought of my husband’s testimony of when his second wife, Pam, became ill with bacterial meningitis.  He said it took him several months to be able to look up and say, Thank you, Lord.  They were living in their motor home at the time of her illness, and his testimony was that one early morning after wrestling in prayer through the night, Dr. Williams walked outside, looked up into the heavens and said, Father, You never make any mistakes, and by Your Spirit in me, I thank you for Pam’s illness.  Do with it as it will please You.  I was convicted this morning to be more thankful.


When we were living in Montana on the ranch in Belt, my husband’s previous house had still not sold.  During that time, one of the pipes in the unsold house burst and part of the house was flooded.  We had just completed the work that needed to be done to restore that part of the house when we received a phone call that beavers were damming the creek and that, as a result, the water was flooding the yard and it was up to the house.  I can remember throwing up my hands and saying, Really, Lord? What next?  Immediately the Holy Spirit convicted my heart with these words, Can You only thank Me when everything is going well?  God’s Word tells us to give thanks in everything.  

It also tells us to be thankful for all things–Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ– Ephesians 5:20.

That’s a difficult task at times, but with the Holy Spirit’s help it can be done. This morning, with the help of the Holy Spirit,  I thanked the Lord for the difficulties I have been experiencing lately, and it felt so good!  How often the Lord asks us to trust Him, and He also asks us to thank Him.  As the 1970”s song says, He has the whole world in His hands.  He has all authority, all power, all control, and not one thing that ever occurs in our life is not without His watch care over us.  Satan is the deceiver, the father of lies, the killer of our joy, the destroyer, and one way in which he does that is to lead us into being unthankful.  I read a book once about a German family who was held prisoner along with other families by the Russians in a country village during World War II. The mother of this family, along with some other ladies, was put into a cold dark basement for a period of time, and when that mother heard the other ladies whining in fear and discomfort, she boldly spoke up and said, That’s what they want you to do, don’t give them the satisfaction. Stop your sniveling! When we moan and complain and are unthankful for the difficulties, that is what the devil wants us to do, but let’s not give him the satisfaction.  In everything and for all things give thanks!
