Look Up

Have you ever gone to the Lord with the question of, Why, Lord? Then after you asked the question, “why”, did you begin to “vent” to the Lord?  I don’t know about you, but I know I have.  I would like to share with you that experience.  

I went to my closet discouraged and down-cast about some situations in my life. I began to weep, and then I asked the “Why” question followed by a torrent of venting showered with my tears.  The Lord in His gentleness spoke these words to me, You're in good company.  My Son experienced worse situations.  He knows how you feel and what you’re experiencing; so, cast it all upon Him. Then He said to me, Trust Me.  It made me truly look up.  I looked up at the One who Stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain and spreadeth them out as a tent to live in. The One who is all-sufficient, eternal, unchanging and self-existent. The One who knows the number of hairs on my head, the thoughts in my heart, and who hears me when I pray.  The One who is able to make all grace abound toward me. The One who never fails me nor forsakes me.  He turned my weeping into rejoicing and thanksgiving.  I began to profusely thank Him—for everything!  My sad stinking pitying self moved out, and the sweet Holy Spirit moved in.  As I began to intercede for various people who were in the very midst of sorrow and heartache, it was as if  I could feel their pain, and I pleaded to God for them.  I left my prayer closet with joy in my heart.

As I read the Bible that morning after leaving my prayer closet, I read the words from Acts14:22–that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. It made me think of my dear husband who after much tribulation in his life was now in the kingdom of God.  He went through trial after trial after trial, but even in the midst of his fiery trials he was able to walk into a room and liven it up with his humor, loving spirit, and larger than life personality.  I know first hand that he did so by looking up to the One who wipes away our tears, quiets our fears, and loves us unconditionally.   I can remember a particular time when someone who had said they would help him with a specific task, which neither he nor I were physically able to do, had called and began to give him a series of reasons why they could not come and help.  He had depended on that help, but with calmness and graciousness he assured them it would be ok, and not to worry about it.  When he hung up, I asked him, What are we going to do? He looked at me with such peace and serenity on his face and said, The Lord knows the need, and He will take care of it.  He had been looking up to our Almighty and loving Father for decades, and this was just another time in which he–and I–learned to look up.  The need was met, and in such a way that we saw the hand of God in it all. I am sharing this with you in hopes that you will be encouraged to look up.  Look unto Jesus!  He cares!  He knows!  He is with you!  He loves you! He will never forsake you!

• Keep a "God's Faithfulness" list. Write down one way you see God's provision, peace, or guidance each day this week. Let it remind you that He is always at work.

• Pray for someone else who is hurting. Turn your focus from your own struggles by interceding for someone who needs God's comfort and strength.

I want to encourage you, as my husband continues to encourage me through his preaching and teaching, to remember that the Lord is with you!  The Word of God is your guide, your comfort, your help, your strength.  Reading it daily, hiding it in your heart, and meditating upon it will keep you in His ways.  Whatever path you are on; the path of loneliness, the path of illness, or whatever path it may be, the Word of God truly is a light to our path.
