Strong and Courageous

Dr. Williams had amazing physical strength, so much so that even as a boy, his dad nicknamed him Bull because he was so strong.  I watched him when he was in his 60’s dig post holes on his place in Tennessee faster and better than the 20 and 30 something year old men who were helping him.  God surely gave him tremendous physical strength that lasted his entire life.  He was also strong in the Lord and always stood strong on Biblical principles.  He made much of the Word of God and spent much time reading it, studying it, meditating upon it, memorizing it and hiding it in his heart. He lived Joshua 1:8–This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. After meals, he would get the Bible and read from it and have prayer. Whether it was just he and I, or family were there, or others were visiting, it didn’t matter he would read from the Bible and pray.  Oftentimes it would lead into discussions over what we had just read. 

He was also courageous for the Lord and definitely unashamed of Jesus!  The Lord said to Joshua, Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest—Joshua 1:9.  I believe that was Dr. Williams’ courage—he believed that the Lord was with him everywhere he went.  He learned through all of his fiery trials that the Lord was with him.  He found that the Lord was with him when his first wife, Wanda, died, and then 4 months and 20 days later his baby girl died. As he then navigated being a young 22 year old single parent to a little 2 year old boy, he found the Lord was with him.  Through the early days of being an evangelist and being tried in his faith, the Lord was with him.  When his second wife, Pam, became sick with bacterial meningitis and he cared for her for 28 years, the Lord was with him.  In our 18 years of marriage and the various trials we faced, the Lord was with us.  Dr. Williams had a tenacious strength in his faith even more than he had physical strength, because the Lord was with him and was his strength through it all.  He challenged people to be much in the Word of God, to be much in prayer, and to find their strength in the Lord.

Fix—Establish—your heart and remain steadfast on the truth of God’s Word. pg 64

The Bible is the standard.  You must bring everything to the Bible, and if it doesn’t agree with the Bible, it is wrong. pg 66

I want to encourage you, as my husband continues to encourage me through his preaching and teaching, to remember that the Lord is with you!  The Word of God is your guide, your comfort, your help, your strength.  Reading it daily, hiding it in your heart, and meditating upon it will keep you in His ways.  Whatever path you are on; the path of loneliness, the path of illness, or whatever path it may be, the Word of God truly is a light to our path.
