Under the Shadow of the Almighty

Psalm 91:1–He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty, became very dear to me several years ago, during a particular time in my life, when I was overwhelmed with specific circumstances that were occurring.  At that time, I had gotten my Bible and gone to my secret place and cried out to the Lord, I need something and I need it now!  The Lord led me to read Psalm 91, and upon reading it my heart was calmed and I was engulfed in the peace of God that passes all understanding.  The entire Psalm was a balm to my soul, but especially verses 1 and 15.  What a comfort to know that we shall abide under God’s shadow when we dwell in communion with Him; and, to know that He will answer when we call as well as be with us in trouble, and He will deliver us.  Over the years I have often referred back to that Psalm when difficult situations arose, and it always comforted and quieted my heart.

Listening to my husband pray always felt like we were in the presence of God.  I know that was because he did dwell in the secret place of the most high.  I know he was able to help so many who were hurting, because he had learned to get alone with God in Spirit guided prayer.  Each of us who have received the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior have the same access to the Heavenly Father.  Alone with God is a place of refuge as Psalm 91:2 says, and a place of security, of peace, of comfort, of hope, and has the feeling of home.  One of the things I miss so much about my husband being gone, is that feeling of being at home with him.  He was one person I always felt at home with.  I believe it was the love that we had for one another, but more than that, it was his constant dwelling in the secret place with the Most High God that made me feel at home with him.  

In some way we are all hurting, and as my husband would put it, There’s a hurting world of people who need the Lord Jesus.  He suffered much in his life, but he found the healing balm in the Secret Place with God, and was able to help, comfort and guide others to the Lord Jesus as a result.  May we follow his example and find ourselves more and more in the Secret Place with the Lord, so that we too may be able to help, comfort and guide others to the Lord Jesus.
