The High Cost of Prayer

Oct 9
3 min read

Have you ever stopped and thought about the high price it cost God and Jesus Christ so that we could pray? The agony and the suffering that they went through in order that you and I could fellowship with the Father in prayer was greater than anything any of us will ever go through.  Think about it for a moment.  God, our Father, sent His only begotten Son into this wicked sin sick world with the express purpose to die for the sins of the world, and the Lord Jesus Christ willingly came—knowing He was coming to go to Calvary’s cross so that fellowship could be restored between man and God.  At Calvary God laid upon His only begotten Son the iniquity of us all.  Oh the grief, and pain, and great sorrow God’s heart suffered so that you and I could have fellowship with Him.  We have access to the throne room of Heaven because the Lord Jesus Christ suffered such agony on the Cross.  His shed blood allows us to talk with the Father at any time of the day or night.

Many times I saw my husband grieved over the lack of prayer in churches, and I often heard him ask the Father to help him be more prayerful.  He understood the high price that it cost our Father and our Savior in order that we could pray, and through the things my husband suffered, prayer became a greater privilege and honor to him, because he knew the fellowship of Christ’s sufferings that made prayer available to all of us.  I know that I never fully understood as my husband did while he was living, but since his death, it has become clearer, and prayer is becoming more and more  not just something I do, but my life.

Prayer isn’t necessarily what we need God to do for us; rather, it is needing to be with Him.  Prayer isn’t only a duty, it’s a desire to be with God and His Son, and desiring The Holy Spirit to lead in prayer.  Whatever suffering we’re going through, the Lord Jesus Christ understands, because He is acquainted with such grief and suffering as He suffered more than we will ever suffer.  He can meet us in our suffering and be that wonderful peace for us—but first we must go to Him and cast ourselves upon Him in prayer.  Prayer is our lifeline, our strength, our power, our sustenance.  The open door of prayer to the Father came at a high cost that the Lord Jesus Christ willingly paid with His life; may this precious privilege of prayer become our life and not just something we do.

Reflections:

🌿Do you treat prayer as the precious privilege Jesus paid so much to give you? Take time today to thank Him and draw near to your Heavenly Father.

Do you desire to make prayer your life—not just something you do?

Dr. Williams had that desire for every Christian, and it is our desire as well. His book, Learn to Pray, is filled with practical and helpful instruction to encourage you in developing a deeper and more consistent prayer life.

With a donation amount of $10 or more we would love to send you Learn to Pray as our gift of appreciation.

With Christmas just around the corner, this book would also make a meaningful gift for someone in your life who desires to grow in their prayer life and draw closer to the Lord.

Give the gift of prayer this Christmas!
