Come

My husband received many wonderful insights into the deeper truths of Scripture from the Holy Spirit while he spent time alone with the Father in prayer.  One such deeper truth was that Peter did not walk on the water–he walked on the Word!  When the Lord Jesus said to Peter, Come, then you can mark it down that the water was about to get walked on because Jesus Christ said, Come!  Peter began to sink when he took his eyes off of the Lord Jesus Christ and began looking at the boisterous and monstrous waves, which is exactly what we Christians do today.  I know, because I have done the very same thing!  We are asked to walk by faith not by sight; however, that goes against everything in our human nature.  When my husband left this world for Heaven, and I began to go forward with the ministry as voted on by the board members of this ministry, it was frightening, intimidating, and extremely overwhelming.  Each step I took was like trying to find my way in a pitch black room full of unseen obstacles.  The Bible was my light and the Lord answered a prayer of mine that I posed to Him early on, which was like Gideon’s fleece; however, when the waves became monstrous, I began to doubt, because I began looking at the waves of impossibilities, lack of funds, and so many other monstrous overwhelming waves.  I kept calling my circle of Godly counselors until I felt I was about to wear out my welcome, so I began asking God to give me confirmation, and He did so through Matthew 14.  The Lord Jesus had just fed the 5,000 men plus women and children, which Peter saw Him do, but now he is sinking in the water about to drown because he took his eyes off of the Lord Jesus and forgot the Word He had spoken.

When I read the words that the Lord Jesus spoke to Peter, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? I was cut to the quick!  The only answer I could give was, because I doubted Your Word.  Our God does not think or act like us.  His ways and His thoughts are higher than ours.  When an artist is painting a likeness of something, that artist keeps looking at the subject being painted.  The Lord Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2); therefore, we need to keep looking unto Him.  His Word promises that He will not fail nor forsake, and we do not need to fear or be dismayed. (Deuteronomy 32:8)  We can walk confidently upon His Word just as Peter walked on the water.

Reflection Questions

  1. What “waves” in your life are tempting you to take your eyes off the Lord Jesus right now?

  2. How has God’s Word given you strength to take a step of faith, even when it felt impossible?

  3. When have you seen God confirm His direction or promises to you, like He did for Peter?

  4. What does it mean to you personally to “walk on the Word” rather than by sight?

  5. How can you keep your focus on Jesus — the Author and Finisher of your faith — in this season of life?
