Abiding Peace

As a follower of Jesus Christ, we have a peace that passes understanding; a peace that remains regardless of our circumstances. Our outward circumstances may change, but the peace of God never changes. In the midst of uncertainty, upheaval, or unrest due to certain circumstances in our lives, we can still have that undisturbed peace within. It is a peace that enfolds us like a cozy warm blanket wrapped around us on cold winter days.

I have found this to be true in airports that have become chaotic because stormy weather had shut down all outbound flights and multitudes were stranded wondering what to do. I was able to find a quiet corner in the airport to seek the Lord’s help, and I received His glorious peace which flooded my soul. I have found peace when circumstances of life seemed to be crashing in on me and they felt unbearable. Fleeing to the Lord with my Bible in hand, I cried out to Him saying, “I need something, and I need it now!” His Word washed a calming peace over me as I read, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him”—Psalm 91:1, 15. God’s peace is always there for us. However, there are times when it would seem that His peace is unattainable. I experienced that following the passing of my beloved husband. Sometimes the ache of missing him took my breath away and God’s peace seemed to be unreachable; however, through the prayer help of close family and friends, I found His peace was there, and it was more soothing than I had ever known before. During this last year of widowhood I have often thought of my husband and how he permeated God’s peace especially in calamity type circumstances. He not only preached about God’s peace, but he lived in the peace of God. I remember him often sharing with people from the pulpit that when his second wife, Pam, was sick for so long that people often asked him how he could be so at peace and joke and have fun. His response was always, “My God isn’t sick.” When I began to think that way it helped. My God isn’t gone! He is still right here with me. He is still my source of peace. There is a peace—real lasting peace— we can have as Christians, and it is found in the person of Jesus Christ! He knows our circumstances. He is Peace—The Prince of Peace. There is lasting and fulfilling peace to be found in Him.
