At the Feet of Jesus

Mary, Martha’s sister, was at the feet of Jesus when He, in Luke 10:42, told Martha that her sister had chosen the good part.  Mary was also at the Lord Jesus’ feet when

her brother, Lazarus had died—Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.(John 11:32) She is once again at the Lord Jesus’ feet when

she anointed His feet with the costly spikenard ointment in John 12:3. My husband would say again and again, We will never belong above the Lord Jesus’ feet.

I remember being in Alabama where he was preaching a revival meeting at a church, and the pastor asked if he would take some time with his staff and their wives to teach them some practical truths of the Christian life.  We were gathered in a section of a large buffet restaurant one evening after a service, and he was teaching them this truth—We belong at the feet of Jesus—always!  That night he was also teaching some principles of prayer, and when he began to pray, the Holy Spirit moved upon my heart that I should get on my knees.  I answered silently and said to the Lord, but we’re in a restaurant.  He quickly spoke to my heart and asked, Can you only kneel in church and at home? You can’t kneel before me in any public place? I was deep in conviction, and so I quietly knelt down at my chair while Dr. Williams was praying.  The joy that filled my heart was greater than the embarrassment I initially was feeling.  My husband was a great example of humbling himself and kneeling wherever he was whether he or someone else was praying.  And he was a great one at various times to ask the people, whether in a large crowd or small, to kneel with him before the Lord.  It was always a beautiful sight to my husband to see a crowd be so willing to kneel with him before the Lord in prayer.  I am so thankful that our pastor—Steve Frost—closed out my husband’s funeral service by asking all in attendance to kneel with him in prayer to honor the Lord, and as a tribute to my husband.  It was a beautiful sight.

When Mary knelt down at the Lord Jesus’ feet, she was humbling herself, and recognizing her position before the Lord.  It was a sign of humility, which is the reason my husband would say that we do not ever belong above our Lord Jesus’ feet. A man said to my husband one time,as they were discussing this, I believe I can sit in this chair and talk to God just as well as getting on my knees, to which my husband replied, Yes, but why would you when you are talking to Almighty God, and you are able to kneel? Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. (I Chronicles 29;11)May I encourage you today to regularly kneel, if you are physically able to, when you pray.
