Have you ever been at a loss as to how to do something, especially when you have never done that particular thing before? After you make a decision and carry it out, do you have second thoughts of, Did I do the right thing? To which you answer, I don’t know! Second guessing ourselves doesn’t do anything to help us, and it sure doesn’t give us any stability.
Most all of us know the verse in Proverbs that tells us to Commit [our] works unto the LORD, and [our] thoughts shall be established. Often we need a reset button, like our computers, so that we will take that verse and apply it in our life situations. Recently I went to the Lord with my “second thoughts” and cried, Help! In His gentle, loving way, He refreshed my mind with Proverbs 16:3. He took it one word at a time and broke it down for me: Commit—roll everything over onto Him and leave it there. Once that is done there can no longer be a roller coaster of second guessing ourselves. Established—Our thoughts will be stable and confident—in Him.
In order to commit something to the Lord, we have to take it to Him. My husband took everything to Him, which the Bible tells us is praying always. On one of our travels in our motor home, we had prayed and committed the journey to the Lord asking Him to give us safety, as well as people we could lead to Christ. I don’t think it was two hours into the trip when a back tire blew out on the motor home. We called road side service and they put us in contact with a tire place close to where we were. A man from that place came out with a new tire. After he changed the tire, my husband talked to him about salvation, and before the man drove away, he prayed to receive Jesus Christ as his Savior. A couple days later as we were driving down the road, I smelled something like burned rubber. After pulling over and investigating, we saw that a front tire on the motor home was about to go. We were able to “limp” into the nearest town and find a tire shop. We found one, got a new tire, and it was put on. During the process of it all, the man at the tire shop, after knowing that my husband was a preacher, began to share with him a huge predicament he was in. My husband was able to give him some biblical counsel and pray with this Christian man. A few other similar situations occurred on that one particular trip, and each time the Lord provided for our need, kept us safe, and allowed us to share Christ with others. My husband never became anxious or worried, but remained calm and joyful, because he had committed the trip to the Lord, and believed He was answering our prayer. It’s so strengthening to think about and remember, and it helps me to strive to do the same. God definitely has our back!
My husband’s book, Prayer and Faith, the Life of Dr. Tom Williams, has been a help and encouragement to so many who have read it. I believe it will be a help to you as well to read about an ordinary man who, through the grace of God, learned to believe God in the trials of his faith, and will encourage you to also believe God. My husband always said, God is just looking for someone to believe Him. Here is an excerpt from his book, Prayer and Faith:
I had asked Him at the beginning of the day to lead us and to help us to do His will, but as we came upon the rock slide and traffic jam, I began to inwardly complain because I had many miles to cover to arrive at our destination on time. God wonderfully reminded me of my prayer that morning, and I was able to see His will in the rock slide and be used to bring souls to Christ. Many of us, like I initially did that morning, want His will if it coincides with what we have planned; however, He will do abundantly above what we ask or think if we completely commit ourselves to Him in everything—even a rock slide. The interstate was finally cleared allowing the long line of vehicles to move again; and the next 200 miles, we continued to hear truck drivers who were caught in the rock slide delay tell other truck drivers traveling the opposite way, “You missed it today! We had an old-fashioned revival meeting during a delay because of a rock slide. A preacher carried coffee, candy, and the story of Jesus to all of us.” Only Heaven will reveal what the Lord did that day in so many hearts.
Reflection—
Write Psalm 37:5 on a card and put it somewhere you will see it each day.
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
