Make Me a Blessing

On each Facing Tomorrow radio broadcast, Dr. Williams would read a hymn, and often he would share commentary on it, which I always enjoyed hearing.  In this particular broadcast he read the hymn, Make Me A Blessing.

If I heard him once, I heard him multiple times pray and ask our Father to make him a blessing.  He looked for ways in which he could be a blessing, and God did make him a blessing.  One way he was a blessing to many was by the way he could make people laugh.  He was always telling a joke.  He would say,Some people can’t remember a joke; I can’t forget them. While at a truck stop on one of our many travels, he told a joke to a Fed-ex driver, which made that man really laugh, after which, he said to my husband, I haven’t laughed like that in months. I’ve been so anxious about the world events. That led into a conversation about the Lord Jesus Christ, and 30 minutes later that anxious Fed-ex driver received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior!  Another time that God used my husband to be a blessing to someone was when he was preaching at a Bible college, and he saw a young man who was wearing a very old and worn out pair of shoes, so he took him to a shoe store and bought him a brand new pair of nice shoes.  While they were driving back to the Bible college, the young man asked how Dr. Williams knew that it was his birthday that day to which Dr. Williams responded that he didn’t know; he just knew that he needed a new pair of shoes and wanted to be a blessing.  The young man then told him that his dad had died, and his mom had buried his dad without shoes so her son would have a pair of shoes to wear to college.  I always loved to hear my husband share this encounter with churches where he preached.

God can make us a blessing to others around us, and He wants to use us to be a blessing.  All we have to do is ask Him to make us a blessing, then be attentive when God leads us to be a blessing.  I remember one day, while at home, my husband and I had just finished eating lunch and were getting up from the table when the Lord spoke to my heart to text my friend in Texas and say, I love you. I thought, hmm, ok. So, I did text her that sentiment, and immediately she text back saying, I needed that right then! How did you know?  I didn’t know, but our Father knew!  That still warms my heart today writing about it.

Seeking to be a blessing was one of my husband's keys to having joy in the midst of trials and heartache. I have found it to be true in my own life, especially now. I have two”go to's” when I begin to get down, thankfulness and seeking to be a blessing to someone.

If you aren't already, may I encourage you to daily be on the lookout for how you can be a blessing to someone, even someone who has maybe been cross ways with you.  People everywhere are hurting with some heartache or sorrow or difficulty of some sort, and they need you and I to be a blessing to them.  Let’s ask God to make us a blessing, then get ready to be a blessing.
