Wonderful Grace of God

As I was reading the Bible this morning, I had to pause as I read the phrase, For I am gracious, in Exodus 22:27.  Think of that—Almighty God is gracious! It filled my heart once again with the wonder and joy of my salvation.  It was by the grace of God that Salvation came down to man.  As I sat with my Bible in hand, my thoughts went to my husband’s salvation testimony.  He was 14 when he went forward in a church service and prayed the “sinner’s prayer” and was baptized; however, as per his testimony, he was unchanged, because he had walked the aisle out of love for his mother and a desire to please her.  Six years later, he took his wife and infant son to church one Sunday morning in December, 1955, because the day before, as he was driving out across a dry river bed, to the oil field where he was working, the Lord had spoken to his heart saying, Tom, I’m tired of you living a lie. Get saved or I am going to kill you.  He said that he jammed on the breaks, got out of his vehicle and fell onto his knees there in that dry river bed and cried out to the Lord saying, I don’t really know how to get saved, but if you will keep me alive until tomorrow, I will take my wife and baby with me to church and get saved.  He did go to church that Sunday morning, and according to his testimony, he fought a raging battle while sitting in the pew.  The enemy was telling him, If you get saved, you will lose every friend you have. You won’t be able to tell your dirty jokes anymore. And our gracious Lord was saying to him, Do you see that couple in front of you? If I come today, they will be going to Heaven. Your wife and baby will also go, but you will not.  You told me, if I kept you alive that you would get saved. In the middle of the pastor’s sermon, Dr. Williams jumped up out of his pew and ran down the aisle and up onto the platform.  He grabbed hold of the pastor and said, I need to get saved, and I mean now! Indeed the Lord is gracious!  When we see the suffering Savior at Calvary, we see His grace to all of us.

Listen to the segment of one of Dr. Williams' broadcasts:

My husband was an avid soul winner, because he never got over the grace that God showed to him.  Everywhere he went he spoke to someone about the love of God and how by grace they too could be saved and receive eternal life and freedom from their sinful flesh.  He wrote a tract entitled, When will you die, because he desired to share the grace of God with others.  I remember one time he came home from being at Meijers and shared with me how a young lady received Jesus Christ as her Savior while he was there.  He was looking for a particular item, but couldn’t find it, and a sales clerk, this lady he told me about, asked if she could help him.  She offered to take him to where the item was, and as they walked, he talked to her about her eternal soul.  She declared that she was angry with God and didn’t want to hear anything about it, because her baby had just recently died.   My husband shared with her about his baby who had died 4 months and 20 days after being born, and then he told her the story of King David’s baby’s death and that he said he couldn’t bring the baby back, but he could go to him one day.  The Lord opened this lady’s heart to listen when my husband asked her if she wanted to see her baby again one day?  Before he left the store, that lady was wonderfully saved by the grace of God.

May I challenge you, as my husband often challenged me, to make as a primary goal, whether shopping, banking, fueling up the car, or whatever it may be, to seek to win someone to Jesus Christ.  He often said, buying groceries is simply the means to which you can tell someone about the gift of salvation because of God’s grace.

As I thought about that phrase, For I am gracious it brought wonder and awe, but also great joy!  He was and is gracious to me and to all of His children.  When we think about His graciousness it eases our sorrow and suffering.  He has shown unmerited favor toward us!  Just let that truth sink into your soul—God is gracious!  It will fill you with joy and you will be strengthened.  May we take this joyful truth to someone else today.
